Thoughts on a pommel cross combination that I am looking at.
Wow that is a long thread title. Had to change to this since the original would not fit.

So here goes. Looking from some thoughts and ideas from the group here.

Looking at having a sword made from the period around 1300 that could have been used by a participant in the Northern Crusades on either side.

What does everyone think of Type N pommel paired with a Style 5 guard? This would be paired on a Type XII blade.

Does this combination work for this time period and location? I do know that I would like to stay away from a Style 2 guard if at all possible.

Any and all thoughts and suggestions are welcome as always.
Long type 1 would be most fitting... 3 and 7 are also present... Look at the examples here: https://www.academia.edu/487202/Swords_with_Pommels_of_Type_N

I personally think long type 1 looks the best...

Luka is quite correct... swords with this pommel type seem to generally be very uniform in style. The two main configurations seem to be long crossguards with a long (but not two-handed) grip, and shorter guards with one-hand length grips... Either way, the guard is almost always simple and straight, with just a few examples of each type being curved.
Thank you very much for the link Luka. That is exactly the type of information that I was looking for, and failed to find. I will be reading it today.

Thank you for the information as well Mark. This is definitely going to be a one handed sword so I will be looking at a Style 1 guard. Though the Style 7 does intrigue me.
Having read through the link more thoroughly it would appear that the Type N pommel was teamed with a Style 6 cross in one example per the article. Since Oakeshott does describe the 6 as a curved form of the 5 I think that this will probably be the route that I will move forward with. Based of course the final decision of the smith and if they think that it will work.

There is still plenty of time though so further ideas would be appreciated.

I also looked at the superb Type O that J.D. had made by the A&A crew for some further thoughts.
