This strange-looking langseax was another project for an Italian re-enactor, which ran in parallel with the WIP: Composite Byzantine Dagger, c. 14th Century and is based on the miniatures from the Ioannes Scylitzes Chronicle.
And although I have a very high quality digital copy of the Chronicle, published by the Biblioteca Nacional de Espaņa, where the original is held, I failed to found the exact miniatures of the interest - with about 470 pages and 574 miniatures, it's quite hard to do this, especially when my mind was blocked by so much information taken in a very short time.
That's why the work was based on these drawings
by Timothy Dawson as I remember. The shape of the blade was taken from No.21 figure, while the hilt was interpreted from figure No.20.
Well, the blade was not a problem at all, but the hilt was discussed widely with the customer. At the end, we reached the final discission the guard should be asymmetrical, something similar with the guards of the modern Bowie-style knives
while the pommel should be in a form of a flat disc - as on the KA-BAR USMC Fighting and Utility Knife
but with greater diameter. The grip and the scabbard were left totally up to me.
And the final result is really beautiful:
The blade was ground by 65G steel
The guard and pommel were made from brass
The grip is a combination of oak core, buffalo horn and bone, plus brass separators.

Hi, Boris, it seems the images have all gone, for a lot of the art sources, could you do a re-upload?

William, this might be because I changed my FB account recently.
