I think you approach the blinding-lantern thing from the wrong direction.
If you are making your way home in the dark, a lantern is quite handy to light your way.
On the other hand, you will be broadcasting your presence to every villain nearby also.
I think the lid is to in a tight situation block out your light so you can hide and evade, rather than the other way around.
