grosse messer (80crv2, O1, and 15N20 blade)
Hello Everyone,
This is my latest sword. It is a grosse messer, with 4 bars of pattern welded steel. Three of the bars are twisted (with 9 layers) and the edge bar is piled. The majority of the steel (about 50%) is 80CrV2. About 30% is O1, and the rest is 15N20. This gives a bright layer, a darker layer, and an intermediate layer of color (O1 is dark, 15N20 is light, 80CrV2 is intermediate).

The blade is 18.5"
Handle (ebony) is 5.5"
OAL is 22"

The guard and the nagel are 60+ layers of 1084 and 15N20. The pommel is a mere 4 layers of 1084 and 15N20.

I have a length of the parent bar from this blade, and I would be happy to part with it if someone wants to make a by-knife to go with this. I will not be making a sheath or by-knife because this project required a couple of months, and I have to get busy making other things for customers. This one was a labor of love, just because I have always wanted to make a messer. Plus, I wanted to make something of a sword out of 80CrV2 to get a feel for it (I made several knives with it first to get the heat treatment dialed in).

Of course, this is for sale. (I am not sure if I am supposed to put pricing or avoid it here, so I am leaving it out. I apologize if this is a mistake and I will add it if that is more appropriate).

Edited to add: $1,100. Special offer for members of this forum.

Thanks for looking. Best wishes to all.

Kevin

This is amazing. I especially like the shape of the hilt and the layers in the guard as well.
