Scottish dirk grip patterns.......
This may belong in the regular forum, but here goes anyway. My latest knifemaking project is a Scot dirk. I have made a couple before, but the grips were kinda plain. This one I want to make super fancy....carved interlace work, maybe some Celtic crosses and thistles........all carved into an oak grip. Does anyone know of a book or website or anything that shows step-by-step how to do the carvings? The crosses and thistles, I think I can improv.....but the knotwork.......there has gotta be a trick to it. Any ideas, anyone?.............Mac........?.........You gotta know! Thanks, all. mcm
Here's a step-by-step from Vince Evan's Picturetrail website:

Hope it helps!
Thanks!!!
You da man, Chad! Thanks! I feel dumb now, though. I have already viewed all those photos, and just completely forgot about them! That was the exact thing I was looking for! The dirk I am building probably will not look nearly that good, but it will look authentic! I ground the blade from a large sawbar, and it is a full edge-and-a-half style with filework on the spine and ricasso. The grip will be ancient oak. I'll get some in-progress shots of it to you guys as soon as I can get a new digital camera. Thanks again, Chad! mcm.
