Who would like a Longboat?
Check out this museum shop. Now thats what I like to see offered!

Longboat
Very cool, thanks for sharing!
Cool, but I don't want to ask how much though!
I sent an inquiry about price, but haven't heard back.

I'm sure shipping a boat from Denmark to Seattle would be reasonable....

Don't crate it up! That's the maiden voyage! Imagine the welcome you'd get at the marina in Ballard!

I'm broke, can't navigate, but I can pull an oar...

Wouldn't you need to go through the North-West-Passage or the Panama Canal to get there? Both sound somewhat terrifying in such a boat. A little at least.
I'm afraid I'll just have to stick to my 14 foot flat-bottom...........close my eyes and pretend. I'll go on a limb and say the 10 meter job, fully rigged, would be close to $100k . Could buy a lotta swords n stuff for that. Besides, it would just look weird floating on my 3 acre pond. ........McM
Buy it
Mark, go ahead and buy it, I live by the St-Laurence River just north of Montreal, and I would offer you free mooring april to november, but would need a hand in dry docking it for the winter months...:)

Over here, now back over here...oh maybe those willows haven't been pillaged yet...

I think it would look nice sailing up the Platte River. Really nice craftsmanship. I could spring for a shield, but like you say, 100k could buy a lot of swords and other things...

Here are some prices estimated from their webpage:

Quote:
Skuldelev 6
(12 meters, 7 pair of oars and sail): €250,000 - €400,000

The Large Gokstad
(10 meters, 6 pair of oars and sail): €113,000 – €160,000

The Little Gokstad
(6,5 meters, 2 pair of oars, sail): €33,000 – 53,000

I love that at the top of the page it has a button: "Add to bag!" Yes I'll just throw that in there with the museum catalog and this Petersen Type C.
I've always wanted a Viking longboat. Here's the plan:
1. Find a crew of young Scandinavians (or others of North-European stock, in a pinch) who want to break free from the shackles of materialism, welfare and high-speed internet, and live life as their ancestors did.
2. Train with this band of neo-Vikings in the arts of mead-drinking, rowing, fighting and pillaging.
3. Acquire a longboat. Split between 20 people, the price wouldn't be prohibitive.
4. Set sail from Copenhagen to a river-side (or seaside) city. Maybe Paris, London, Amsterdam or Seattle. Vikings did it, and they didn't even have Google maps.
5. Raid! Pillage! People would be too surprised to fight back ("what, I didn't know there was renfair on!", then "Hey, they've captured our parliament and taken all our monies!")
6. Establish a petty kingdom or Jarldom.
7. Attract to the Viking banners men from all world round.
8. Build more boats. The cycle continues.

Now, who's with me? Shouldn't take more than two or three years, all up, and more exciting than university.
No, thanks, I've already got one.
I'm rather more curious about where one could learn how to sail boats like these.

Got a nice email from Frederik about pricing. In addition to the prices mentioned previously in this thread, they do have a lower-cost option in the Trýbekkur:

Quote:
Trýbekkur
(2 pair of oars, lug sail) €18,000
Traditional Nordic ships of a newer era, built in the same tradition but 800 – 1000 years younger. These are far cheaper to build, because the construction is along more efficient work processes and the use of modern tools.

However, as you might expect, shipping ain't cheap:

Quote:
Shipping
We have shipped boats around the world, as they are conveniently packed in to a 40 ft container. Calculate approximately €2,000 for freight costs for the large ships.

So, a world cruise culminating with a raid on Ballard sounds like a good option. Plus, Ballard has a large Scandinavian population that would likely welcome liberation from the condo-dwellers and hipsters who have taken over their neighborhood. Ballard also has plenty of places to slake your thirst after a long voyage.

Very nice boats - if my retirement strategy (lotto tickets) works out, I'd love to get one.
