Axe Haft From Kirkkomaki Grave 37?
I read that a type M axe haft was found in Kirkkomaki Grave 37, presumably by Dr. Leppaaho. As far as I know this is the only haft from the 1000-1200 period that's ever been found.I know it was 42.5 inches long but I have no idea what it looked like, anybody have a pic of it?

There are currently no photos of the axe yet, Mike.
The excavations where this find was found were conducted in 1991-92. I believe Henrik Asplund was in charge of these.

You can see the shape of axe shaft here: http://www.ku.lt/leidykla/files/2012/09/Archa...TICA_8.pdf

Look for plate VI:1 in the page 402 of the PDF. Article by Sari Mäntylä starts from page 302.
Thanks, Jussi!

There's a lot of decay but from the looks of it the haft was originally either straight or had a very slight "S" curve and it appears to get wider towards the butt.
