A female assistant coach from Jing Ding club came over to spar with my students. She had the upper hand!

Sparred with a student from Canada, who wore historical Chinese armor to spar for the first time. He asked me to hit hard because his first sparring session went easy. He wanted to taste the real deal (thus wearing the armor).

Here's the photo:

When I didn't wear full kit, I was hit where my armor used to be. Damn. :P

Trained Yue so that he could perform my strikes and defense. Worked very well for him, got me 5 times straight in the latter part of the sparring once he got used to the new techniques.

Mars vs Yue, learning the new tactic I taught them.

Mars put it to use on me, but the calculation took the toll on his reflex. I told him to do his instinctive style in the last 6 rounds. The tactic became natural then.

Same for Yue. The last 6 rounds were let him do instinctive style and the tactic worked well then.

Very entertaining and very educational and impressive.

I guess your wife is very very good with the spear as you seem to be the only one using or needing protective equipment. ;) :p :?:

So, you wanted to go out and have a beer and your wife said you could only go if you could get past her and her spear :?:
( Well, mostly joking ..... :D  )

I find that from this camera angle it's easier to understand and see who may have won the bouts ? Maybe it's because it reproduces the view one has when one is sparring/duelling ? And from the side angles one can get fooled by perspective and not be as sure about who got to whom first !

Maybe you should shoot more of your videos from this angle ?

On the technical side I think I see your wife controlling the engagement distance very well, as well as lengthening and shortening the spear making it difficult to get past the spear head.

There may be at least be one occasion where I think she could have used the butt end of the spear by reversing it when you got past her point and where closing in.

I think this does show two things: Firstly that the spear has an inherent advantage over the sword if one has even minimal skill with the spear over a better sword fighter, but against a competent spear user the swordsman is in serious trouble, and your wife seems very good with the spear.

Oh, and you both did seem to be having a lot of fun.
Hello! Thanks for watching. My wife has learned spear for 5 lessons only. She has talent in it though.

There was no choice for video angle since it's the corridor. But yes, it represents the "first person view" pretty well indeed. No wonder so many video games take this perspective for the player to view the character.

Yes, she wanted to butt me with the spear's end but the ceiling blocked her attempt. We'll spar again on rooftop when there was no raining, and see how this will affect our performance. I can do more, but so does she. It'll be interesting to see.

Thanks again. :D
