Purple Dirk
Here's one I finally finished up for a friend out in California. I had fun with this one and have been messing with it on and off for over a year before finally finishing it up. The single edged blade is 1050 steel which has been claycoated and quenched like I do my Japanese blades...kind of. It has a neat blotchy "hamon". The handle has a stainless frame around the tang an the purpleheart slabs are pinned through it. I figured using stainless on the section where sweat and such are would help reduce any handle corrosion. The tang is a through the pommel and peened down tight. The gaurd is brass/copper mokume with a fileworked stainless spacer.

The scabbard is purpleheart with a lacewood spacer and figured oak upper throat section. I thought of the laced leather upper while watching my wife make a bodice for a lady :D . I think it has a nice "medieval feel" to it. I wet the leather, applied a bit of wood glue, then laced and let dry. It's pretty permanent now! Anyway, onto the pics.....

Blade length:11.5"
Overall length: 16"
Steel: 1050 plain carbon steel
Handle: purpleheart wood
Fittings:brass/copper mokume
Sheath: purpleheart, lacewood, oak, leather
Would look stylin with some platform shoes and a velvet jacket

Most excellent! The laced frog around the scabbard really sets off the beauty of the wood. Fine work indeed.

Yeah, Joel, I as well. Quite nice.
Don...

Fantastic job on that one... I love the graceful lines and beautiful color.

Would love to see some more of your work. :D

The university closes in a day, so i don't have to be back at work until the 3rd of January. I should be able to finish up a pair of seaxes and a couple tantos. I'll post pics here when they're done. My time lately has been taken up with a couple armour projects and a knife competition piece.

Here's a link to the comp piece which I just finished:

It was meant to be a fun contest...and definitely was. Mine was a unique twist on a Japanese blade!
Now that is a beauty!

Any chance to see larger pics? When I click on the pic it opens a new window but the pic is only tiny bit bigger...
