One more example, a kusari katabira with what look like integral mail gloves.

Eric,
BTW, do you know why the clam-shells were so widely spread compared with maille gloves?
I personally don't think they have any ground-breaking advantages - either technological or combat. But this extensive use could mean something. I know, this could be a pure speculation, but what's your opinion?

Less interference with archery? Especially thumb-draw archery.

Boris that is a good question, there has to be some sort of reason why so many cultures that use a bazu band type of arm guard also used a mitten type of hand defense with an open palm instead of an armored glove. I am thinking that there is a possibility that just like the Japanese, warriors who used bazu band type armor wore gloves and that by its self would account for the use of the mitten type of hand guard. I have not seen any mention of Indian, Ottoman, Persian warriors wearing a leather or cloth glove but that does not mean they did not. Samurai wore thin leather gloves, and their arm defense (kote) also had an open palm. So far the only other type of hand defense I have found is the Indian plated types but I can not find any images showing if they were a true gauntlet or just a finger cover with an open palm.

The inside of your hands are unlikely to be a target so the cheaper one piece clam-shell is better, and then there is the improved grip and fine finger control with out having the hassle of complety removing gloves.
