Help with 1822 British Sword
Hi Please excuse me im new to all of this !
I am completely new to collecting swords, I have always had an interest just never been in a position to purchase anything ! I have been offered a 1822 Pattern George IV Pipeback British Infantry Officer's Sword, it has no scabbard, the grip is still intact and quite good, the guard is tarnished but still good BUT the blade is completely pitted and basically a sword blade shaped piece of rust !
I really like the look of it but its 120 GBP can anyone tell me is that too much ?

Many thanks for any assistance
If you're able to edit the subject heading to include the item, I think you'll attract more expert notice. Something like, "Help with 1822 British Sword". There are are at least several folks here with expertise in that area of collecting and who might not notice the thread otherwise. I'm not one of them, alas. But welcome to myArmoury.com!
Hi Mark,
Don't waste your money, if it's as you say then it's a piece of scrap iron with a handle and that's all it'll ever be. Go to a local auction house, most of them have 19thC British swords on a reasonably regular basis and spend your money on one complete with scabbard and a blade in good condition. Most collectors have been down this route when they first start and I would say without exception every one would tell you the same thing, if it is in poor condition leave it, there will always be another one. There are exceptions but we are talking of pieces that are considerably older than 19thC British pattern swords.
My regards,
Norman.
I have nothing to add other than to agree with Norman!
Yes, from the way you describe it even £20 would be too much! Go to one (or several) of the arms fairs where you will see a selection of swords in better condition and a range of prices.
Neil
