Greek shield (diplyon?)
Friends,
I just got this shield from Ebay for only US$2, said to be a re-built Museum Replicas item. While the shape resembles some of the 'diplyon' shields of Bronze Age and pre-Classical Greece, I can't quite place it. Can anyone help me to assign this shield shape to a precise time and place? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, r

Yah, looks like their old flat plywood thing with something laced over it. If the top and bottom were flatter, not so deeply convex, it would look much like a Hittite shield, late Bronze Age. Those were often illustrated with a pattern like a brick wall, though I suspect that may have indicated they were woven from something, not actually made of bricks! (Would be a tough shield, though, eh?)

Probably a good 2 bucks worth of leather thong, there. Just sayin'...

Yeah. I buy these things to dismantle for the leather to use in other projects. You have a lot more than $2 worth of leather there.
