Burgonet?
Hello everybody
I would be grateful if you could take the time to look at this burgonet and give me an opinion on what I have here, real/reproduction, nationality etc
I bought it because of the handmade quality of the metalwork, and my own interest in making metal objects.

I'm no armour expert by a long shot, but I'd say you have a 19th c. reproduction of an earlier style English/Scot helm there. Damn nice one too............McM
It could be real. You'd need to get it to a pro to be sure. The to half make like that was done in period. Some of the Burgonets in the collection I worked on were made like that.

Where are you at? I suspect you can find someone to look at it in person.

Some things to look for are welding and artificially created patina

Thanks. I have looked at examples of similar helmets in museums but can find nothing to convince me one way or the other.
The only thing that looks different is the plume holder which is a pierced thin brassy copper material.
The whole helmet weighs about 3lbs which seems quite light.

I'm in suffolk England
I can find no evidence of any modern technology, it is the inside that makes me think it has some real age and then the outside seems too good.
I was considering whether it was worth taking to the royal armouries.
One more picture of plume holder

J.,

That hinge looks somewhat odd to me there.... Could be a later addition though so not a big deal. If you are in Suffolk there are many places to take it. Might contact a city archeologist and see if he can recommend and local specialists on arms and armour. In London you have a number of places as well that could help.

We had helmets that were in amazing condition at the museum I was at. I'd tell you to go there but not sure they have any armour specialists there anymore and it is in York so a bit of a drive.
