A TEAM of underwater archaeologists is to be dispatched to a secret location on the River Shannon following the discovery of two ancient swords.
The swords were discovered by divers from the Shannonside Sub Aqua Club in Co Offaly, in August and September.
Postman John Heffernan discovered the first sword while on a routine dive.
Assistant keeper at the National Museum, Dr Andy Halpin, said it was probably a Viking sword from the 10th Century.
The second sword is an older pre-Viking type dating from between the 5th and 7th Centuries.
The National Museum of Ireland is currently carrying out conservation work on both swords. They intend to send a team of archaeologists to the site in the coming months.
