It is hard to imagine how armourers achieved such a high standard of finish in the past without use of disposable gloves - I find them indispensable.

This is what I'd call the medium finish between bright and fully blued. I used Perma Blue to get it completely black, then used the 000 steel wool to bring it back to this. I don't think it would work very well to try to blue a piece up to where you want it. The process is too fast for that, and in any case you have complete control over the pull-back process described above.
