Original 18th c. smallsword leather hilt cover
I just came across the fact sheet of this unusual object: a promotionnal hilt cover, with the address and sign of a mid 18th parisian sword maker and dealer. I could just imagine a gentleman proudly bringing home his new silver hilted sword, protected by this leather cover.

The object is part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum

Very cool David, great find.

On that note, I am posting here a recent sale of a smallsword marked to Lemuel Wells, of New York circa 1800. The wire likely a refit.
