I think it looks pretty ridiculous but then again, to me, most fantasy swords do.
I am a HUGE Tolkien fan though, and will certainly see the movie.

I kind of like the blade myself. I can't wait for the movie to come out.
However, I do not like the fact that dwarves now look like Klingons. Here is a litlte comparison I did a few months back when I first say some of the teaser images. Not an exact copy, but definately seems to have more than a passing similarity.

Gosh dernnit! As much as I like the design of Orcrist, I don't like how much it has in common with a sword I've designed for a dwarf character of my own.
Its pretty much a crossbreed between a kopis and a kriegsmesser. It is two-handed like the latter, and boasts a like hilt, spiral crossgaurd with ring. Its blade is more deeply kopis than the Orcrist in that it boasts an inward curve.
I can't wait for the Hobbit non-the-less!

If the movie(s) end up being good I'll give a hoot less about the costumes and weapons. If the movies end up being bad its just one more thing to complain about. Sounds like a win either way! :-)

Wow the picture above even makes me think it looks worse!
I've never liked any of the elvish swords in TLOTR movies anyway.
To be fair, I don't think I would be satisfied with ANY design as I am, like the biggest Tolkien nerd ever, and these works were given life in my mind years and years before the movies were even announced.

I'm not a fan, honestly.
To be even more honest, I don't like the looks of the actor or his costume either. It just doesn't seem right. For one, why is Thorin so young looking, secondly why is he dressed like some weird fur trader/klingon? I want gentlemanly travel armor fit for a nobleman seeking his birthright, not boring cliche fantasy fare that looks like it's from the TV series Legend of the Seeker.
I complain a lot, this is true, however I feel my complaints are valid this time. Bad costumes, bad actor choice.

How'd you work that out?
The earliest battle depicted in the films is the conclusion of the War of the Last Alliance in SA 3441, some 3552 years after the first use of Glamdring by Turgon at the Battle of Unnumbered Tears.

Well I must say that so far I am not impressed with what I see.
All I see is another case of Hollywood changing things to sell more tickets instead of being true to the story.
As for the sword Orcrist, according to the story it was made in Gondolin for the Goblin wars. These were special weapons of war made by the most skilled elven smiths of their time with the same attributes as Gandalf's and Bilbo's weapons (I wander if they will remember to make all three swords glow blue this time when Orc's are around). I personally do not believe that one of these weapons would look like a bulky over-stylized meat cleaver that has more to do with a fantasy based video games than with this story as written by Tolkien.
I will go see the movie when it is released but my expectations are not to high.

probably not glamdring..
pete jackson will keep i non glowy to keep continuity with the LOTR films where he apparently made it not glow to make sting more distinctive and unique..

What are goblins made out of?
I honestly don't mind this sword's look. Does it match perfectly with obscure footnotes from Tolkien? not perfeectly. That being said, the fact that it has some detail on the blade that matches sting is nice, and does make the two of them look like a kriegmesser / dagger set. As a side note, that doesn't match with my own preferred version of Sting's origin (from a suprisingly well written fan fic called, "The Fall of Gondolin") where it was made for an 8 year old Earendil, along with the mithril shirt, and would not share such styling details with Orcrist.
But returning to origional point, I like the styling. Is it historicaly inspired? no. Does it look "fantasy" yes, but that seems perfecty acceptable in this case.

It's... not really what I expected at all, but I suppose it's kinda interesting. I can sort of see it being made in the same stylistic tradition as Sting.
Not sure I like the dwarf swords, though.

Hello
As to the dwarves looking like Klingons...There`s only so many ways, a longhaired, bearded, steely eyed,warrior-ish, individual,can look:-) I agree that the Dwarvish weapons look kindof funky. But then, they`re not human,so their aesthetics
are going to be different. I do kinda like Bombur`s hammer,though.

Why is it that most of the dwarves have that knobby look, big noses, etc., but one looks like a typical hollywood leading man type?

I get what there doing with the swords, they want them to look geometric, which is how much of the lotr dwarf stuff looks in the movies and games.
