on this english effigy you can see how the aventail is fitted around the chin. actually, the mail is made of two different pieces, riveted together and you can see from the edging that it is well padded. it goes right under your jaw and should fit very tightly. it's an early model (ca.1350) but even if effigies were party stylized, it would work precisely as a chin strap though i wonder, how you would put it on.

Look at the guy in the center, with the flat-visored bascinet (gotcha! A flat visor in the '80s-'90s, yay!) raising the hammer with both hands.
If you look close enough you'll notice that on his left shoulder under his aventail there is shown a brown garment, very probably a padded aventail =)!

Nice find Augusto, it also seems to show that the brown layer is attached to the bottom edge of the mail, as it folds up because of the figures raised arms.

This is a nice picture. I am not sure if it is a flat visor, though. It could just be a frontal, semi-frontal view of the Hundsgugel visor.

Felix, that is also how I would interpret that visor.

I doubt it, since the guy below the one with the visible padded aventail is nearly depicted in a profile view and doesen't show the point that other profile-drawn visors have. But this could be just my distorted iterpetation sice I WANT that to be that way =).

Haven't been around here much lately, but I was looking into this topic again, and I think I found something. In the Holkham bible many of the foot soldiers seem to be wearing a padded coif like what I linked to earlier in the thread, except that they appear to be buttoned up in the front.
