What to see in Netherlands & northwestern Germany
Hi!
Since I'm planning to visit Netherlands (and probably northwestern part of Germany too) this summer I've been wondering if there are any interesting museums, buildings and other attractions which cover the medieval period.

So what I'm asking you is what do I need to see if I'm heading there and am interested in medieval period?

Cheers
Miha
there is the dutch army museum in Delft.(Roman to now) http://www.armymuseum.nl/get?site=legermuseum.en

and the amsterdam city museum (medieval to 1980's) http://www.amsterdammuseum.nl/en

and get some stroopwafels.

and a few medieval festivals in the summer.

give me a shout if you need some more information.

Since you're heading towards the direction of Germany, i'd also recommend you to make a stop at Nijmegen. it the centre of the city has a nice medieval feel to it.
i'm not sure when you're planning to go but on the 24, 25 and 26th is a festival called the gebroeders van Limburg and a large part of the city will be tranformed into a medieval market with items to buy and activities to see. (and it's free)

Altough not directly from the medieval period there's museum there called the Valkhof. It has some really nice Roman equisterian facemasks on display.

In Arnhem a city near Nijmegen there's a museum called the open air museum, a sort of collection of dutch buildings form various periods in our history.

as with the post before if you need some more information just let me know

can highly recommend the gebroeders van limburg festival
Are there any specific exhibits you would recommend? or any comments on them?
in the dutch army museum is a exhibition about tournament knights.
some late 15th begin 16th century armour.

and some daggers swords and poleweapons
Hi,
Legermuseum in Delft is truly amazing - beautiful collections, I took really good photos of swords there. You can also visit the fortress in Naarden, there are not many weapons there, but itīs really interesting place.

I "third" the recommendation of the Legermuseum in Delft. Here's a taste of some of the stuff they have.

Thank you all for your ideas! I'll definitely visit the museum in Delft and probably others too but I'm not sure because there are three other guys coming along and they have their own interests too. It seems that I'll be able to come to gebroeders van limburg festival too if we have enough time.

Thanks again and greetings from Slovenia!

awesome stuff, thanks for sharing

planning a visit as soon as I can ;)
Another tip: the Muiderslot

It's a well preserved (or much restored ;)) example of a typical Dutch water castle. It's quite small compared to castles in other countries, but the architecture is interesting and typically Dutch. The (nice) interior is mostly 17th C., but they do have a fairly nice collection of late medieval / early renaissance swords.

If you are interested in archeology, then the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden is worth a visit.

In North-Western Germany, the Historisches Museum in Aurich is quite interesting. It focuses on the very interesting history of Friesland (mainly Ost-Friesland) in the middle ages.
