Any ideas out there on how this effect was achieved? Haven't experimented yet and thought I might be able to save myself some trouble if anyone has any experience of making one of these.

Hi Stephen

Its pretty much the same as making a smooth grip. The spiral does not have to be that deep and one needs to leave enough room to drive the wire down into the grooved areas. The gentle sweep is a bit easier than a deep grove. The more malleable the wire the easier it is as well. That is one of the areas that is difficult is getting a period style of wire to work with as opposed to modern styles of steel wire.

Best
