Hello all,

I am looking for a good book or article on battle at sea during the middle ages.
Specifically, I am not interested in general overview of battles, rather I am looking for an indepth tactical analysis. Any time from the 6th century up to the use of cannon would be fine. While I am specifically looking for Mediterranean ships, Baltic would also be acceptable.

This article on the battle of Lepanto is the type of thing I am looking for, however I would like something earlier than this.

I am trying to answer several questions here:
Was ramming as important in the Middle Ages as it was in the Classical period? How important was non-gunpowder based artillery in ship-to-ship combat? How do these relate to boarding?

Thanks all.
