I put my order in for the 15th Century Bastard sword which I intend to use and abuse for solo drilling. Paid in full in advance, because I'm confident about the product for that use based on the Viking I was able to evaluate.

I knew I was going to hate looking at this thread. Looks like another great time was had by all. But my pool noodles have all heaved a huge sigh of relief at having been spared. Little do they know that the reprieve is only temporary.

I agree with Nate B. concerning the Brescia.

After cutting with the prototype last year, and handling a couple of production samples last weekend, I can say that the Brescia is a very nice sword. This sword is the one that really got me thinking about the more accutely pointed longswords.

It's really a sword that's best suited for the civilian duelling of the period. It has a bit too much flexibility in the blade to be a really dedicated armour puncher. I'd choose either the Regent or the Sempach/Landgraf for that. All in all though a lovely sword.

I also saw Peter's drawings for the scabbard and belt furniture for this sword. Sweet!

Thanks Nate and Patrick. That's exactly what I want (I mean the photos and the usage of the sword). I'm looking for a sword that excel in both cut and thrust for unarmored combat. That's what I practice after all. ;D (wearing plate armor in Hong Kong is asking for a pass out due to the weather)

I'm planning to buy it in the first half of the next year.... been drooling over it for 2 years already. Big Grin

In the past I've seen photos of you and your training methods, and etc. The Brescia would indeed be a perfect choice for what you're doing. If the Brescia proves to be beyond your means you may want to consider the Castellan as well. While a bit shorter than the Brescia, it would still work well within the same system.

Thanks for the recommendation! Not by coincidence, my current sword made by Tinker is exactly the same size and blade/hilt length proportion of Castellan. You have an accurate eye for sure!

I've read posts about your past involvement in armored combat and about the one you got knocked off the bridge. I can't help to wonder what knocked you off the bridge. Doesn't seem to be caused by a friendly source at all (well, even if it was a friendly source, I think it might not stay friendly after the accident).

I have friends who've injured themselves during martial arts practice (mostly unarmed martial arts) and some of them have to stay off from the hobby/career due to that. I'm sure it's a miss for the swordsmanship circle that your injury forbade your further pursuit of the subject. Sad

My header off the bridge was just one of those things that happens in these pursuits. It was a melee on a bridge kind of thing. I got blindsided by somebody and took a swan dive. I wasn't really injured and didn't take it personally. Everyone said that I looked good during the fall too Big Grin

A few years ago I did recieve a serious injury that put an end to my study of Asian martial arts (Ryu Kyu Kempo). My injury was due to the Sensei's F'up. He never took responsibility for any of it, so even though I healed ( for the most part) and returned to life in general I wasn't about to go back to that dojo.

My lack of serious martial pursuit nowadays is really due to location, and the demands of job and family. There simply aren't any schools within driving distance for me to attend. Watching Bob Charron last weekend really made me wish there was!

Family... right. I've two westerner friends in Hong Kong who practices with me. One from Australia and lives in Hong Kong permanently called James Derrick, job is a doctor in hospital. Another one from USA and will live for 6 months here namely Parke. Both have Hong Kong native woman as wife. You bet their wives don't like them to come practice with me.

For Parke who has been practicing iaido for a year, his wife mainly concerns about his bruises on his arm after one sparring event with a strong hitter (not me)... Of course the money spending on getting sword practice gears as well. :P So her disagreement for him to get more involved in swordsmanship has become stronger and stronger. :|

For James, he is actually too good to be worried about injury. He had been practicing SCA for 20 years back in Australia when he was young and single. I knew he was keeping an eye on me for 4 months before contacting me personally since my venture started because there was someone from Hong Kong kept accessing my website's English version. The contact aroused his long departed interests in sword and swordsmanship again. Not long after participated our sparring, he was thinking of buying a MRL or something for test cutting. Then I suggest him for a next gen. Being a rich guy like he is, he went for next gen after I'd briefly englightened him about the advantages it held against his original choices. As he was also a leather worker for a sword shop before being a doctor, he made scabbard for his Next Gen Norman and also a gorget for throat protection.

There was once he brought along his kids and wife to watch him fight but his wife didn't seem to appreciate her husband prowess much and led the kids away to an indoor fishing center where there was air-conditioner. They only returned when James was about to go away and he asked if they had seen him fight me. They simply said no. You can guess how sad he looked at that moment. They dun seem to share his interest and admire what he is good at besides his money making profession.

Later on he also told me that his domestic worker and his wife kept complaining that he made his apartment dirty with his leatherwork.

Nowadays, James still come to spar with us often, and sometimes with female companion. Just not his wife but a colleague that doesn't mind climbing a hill, sweat a bit and see him kick our arses. HA HA HA!

Fortunately my wife is very supportive of my interests and actually shares many of them. We both have a strong intrest in medieval history. We were quite active in re-enactment years ago, and my wife actually was a student in the Dojo for awhile. However, a more than full-time job, as well as children who are involved in many activities, prevents me from focusing on these things as much as I'd like to.
