was once more protected -- this time by a placenta of shrink-wrap. Setting the item down as one
might a new-born, gently and with awe, I rubbed my hands together to face the next stage ...

I can guess why my post was moved from the Historical Forum to the Off-Topic Forum.
But allow me to remind whoever moved the post that with a lil internet-elbow grease one
would discover that the title of this thread -- The Mehmet -- can be associated with
the historical information the good Mr. Bedrosov provided :

I did most directly announce my package was from John Lundemo Of Odinblades.
So it is pretty safe to assume that the item within is not a lamp or fishing rod, though John
might be able to make both with equal excellence for all I know.

If one is even remotely familiar with a few of my past threads, all of my sharp and pointy
possessions are historically inspired. Completely accurate ? maybe not.

Lastly ...

I do hope my fellow forumites don't mind exercising at least a fraction of the patience
anyone familiar with ordering a custom-anything must certainly show while waiting to
see this product of John Lundemo's craftsmanship. I thought I would do something a
bit different, not that maybe someone didn't do this before. And some of you are having
as much fun as I. Thankyou. I don't think you'll be disappointed with what's to come ...

So far, this thread is about a box, packing materials, and a few sword-related words. It has surprisingly little content given the number of posts.

Threads related to, but not about, weapons go in Off-Topic. If there is a change to the content of the thread that makes it on-topic, meaning that it actually shows a weapon and generates actual discussion, I'm sure it can be moved back if that's warranted. Commentary about the moving, off-topic in and of itself, can then be removed. Further, any comments about moderating policies should be sent directly to a moderator.

despite the fact that
a) (as a Greek and descending from Constantinople myself) Mehmet Fatih is not one of my favourite historical figures,
b) your ingenious presentation has stirred my (and everyone else's) anticipation to the extreme
c) I envy you from the depths of my soul for having one of John's work
d) the sword is hardly discernable (yet)

please accept my best congratulations for what seems to be a great sword!!!

Is this thread about a box ? No, but it does seem as if the process of revealing the content of the box is getting to some of us. I just thought it was good fun, so I participated in the same spirit.... I didn't think it would end up '' bumping and grinding'' the thread into another category!

Does Odin really shrink-wrap their swords, or did he put saran wrap on it himself just to stall for another day?

I appreciate the "fun" aspect of this thread (if this stuff isn't fun then what is it?) but at this juncture, with photos of your sword (kilij?) posted elsewhere on the internet already, I don't see the point of continuing along this line........

While curved blades aren't my thing, the color scheme on the hilt is really beautiful...even from this distance

The specs of The Mehmet by John Lundemo of Odinblades :

Total Length : 45 inches
Blade Length : 35 Inches
Blade Width At The Hilt : 1 3/4 inches
Length Of Backedge : 12 inches

The Wood grip : bubinga
Full tang construction with four very aesthetically pleasing pegs ( I forget what
John called them ... )

We settled on these specs for the commission to try and keep costs reasonable,
and I used my Albion Duke as a guide-line. Of course the scabbard is not historical,
also to keep costs reasonable, but I have ALWAYS liked the Odinblade-style scabbards
John makes.

I believe John posted the sword a shade under 3 pounds in weight. If I did my
conversions correctly, the original Sword Of Mehmet's overall length is 49 inches
with a blade length of 41 inches. The sword by Vince Evans is 54 inches in total
length with a blade length of 41 3/4 inches.



Words can't express how much I think of what John did with the cross, pegs in the
grip, pommel, and the flow of the grip into the pommel. We did talk briefly about the need
for some counter-balance to such a big blade, and I was all in with John's reccomendation;
even if it challenged historical accuracy.

That my friend is one incredible work of art. It may not be as ornate as the original,but the attention to detail is so obviously apparent, it reveals a sword that has been executed to perfection. Had I been John Lundemo, I would not have let you have it in order to keep it for myself for inspiration.
