Philip, "ave Maria gratia plena" means "hail Mary, full of grace".
I love your choice of end cap, Eric. The Latin inscription is great, but putting it on a rose-shaped brass is perfect. Not just beautiful aesthetics, it shows that you understand the times and people who would have made or used something like this long ago. Using your hands to get inside their heads (figuratively, I mean).
Around 1890 - 1930 or so, the Arts and Crafts movement produced an amazing number of tremendously talented amateur craftspeople, themselves inspired (largely) by the handcrafted artifacts of the middle ages. Insurance salesmen and housewives made, as hobbyists, works of art in metal, wood, leather, etc. of incredible quality and detail, some highly collectible and of museum quality today. The caliber of the DIY stuff seen here of late makes me wonder what will be said of it in a hundred years... very exciting to see this happening again.
