Book finds and bargains
I'm wondering if we need a thread similar to the Ebay finds thread where we can post links to hard-to-find books, or bargains we come across in our travels.

My hope is that this can act as a 'heads up' for other myA members of possible leads and bargains, but, like the Ebay finds thread, I'm happy for people to also post/gloat about their own purchases.

To kick it off, two books just listed in the Ebay finds thread:

Albrecht Dürer: Waffen und Rustungen, listed at ZVAB/ChooseBooks.com for EUR 98.95: http://www.zvab.com/basicSearch.do;jsessionid...heck_sn=on (Thanks for the lead, Arne!)

Lots of copies of Europaische Hieb Und Stichwaffen in the US$20-40 range: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults...=0&y=0
Whoa! Thanks for the tip, Mark! Europaische Hieb Und Stichwaffen is hundreds in the U.S. and I just picked up one from your link for under $40, including shipping!
Hi Sean,

No problem ... seeing as this is the second book lead I've given you, I was prompted to see what copies of Artists and warfare in the renaissance are selling for ...

Folks, when Sean bought a copy a few months ago, the price was $45, and the next one up was $80. ABE are currently listing one seller who has a copy for US$37.10, which is an absolute steal!

They also have five copies in the $60-70 range, which is still a bargain: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults...=0&y=0
This book was given as a source by Gerry Embleton's Medieval military costume recreated in colour photographs (Ramsbury, Crowood Press, 2000).

It's a great source for hard-to-find images. Here's the description I've posted about it before:

Quote:

The book contains 345 images from the mid-15th to mid-16th centuries, and focusses on Germanic and Italian sources, and goes into a lot of detail about the differences between each. Gerry listed it as a source under 'soldiers' rather than 'arms and armour', and that makes sense: the book contains some familiar images seen in armour contexts, but the content is much broader, and contains details about dress, custom, and fashion that I think Sean, Ben, and others here will love ... a great resource!
Sorry I was a bit late to tell you about this one: a copy of Henryk Socha's semi-rare Elementy broni samurajskiej tsuba; it went for US$98: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...K:MEWAX:IT
Swords of the British Army: The Regulation Patterns 1788-1914 (revised edition) by Brian Robson--the "Bible" of British military swords--is now available as a reprint from Naval & Military Press. Used originals can go for as much as $300 US, so this £49.95 GBP reprint is most welcome.

This is a good idea. I'll share my favorite used book aggregator: http://www.bookfinder.com/. I always check there before buying a book online.
Just noticed this copy of Leather and the warrior by Waterer for sale for only $45: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL...D0%26y%3D0

Someone buy it soon ... I want to sell my own copy here for more than that! :D
Doug Strong's 'Guilt free books' sale
For those who don't know already, Doug Strong has some Chivalry Bookshelf stock available. These are being billed as 'guilt free books', as he's ensuring the authors get a portion of the sales. (For those who want the full story, a search of the usual fora will tell you more than you want or need to know.)

He's currently listing

Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship, Ringeck/Tobler
In Service of the Duke, Kal/Tobler
Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi, Vadi/Porizo & Mele

All are 25% off. Limited stocks remain.

Books can be found here: http://talbotsfineaccessories.com/books/guiltfree.html
Fire Steels, Cacciandra & Cessati
Fire Steels, by Cacciandra and Cessati has just come up on ABE Books: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL...e=viewbook

At US$130, that's about what the last few copies I've seen have listed for ...

These don't come up very often, and this is only one of a couple of books published on the topic.
This could go here or under Ebay finds. Here's Curtis' 2,500 Years of European Helmets for $70: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem...0785105452 .

I bought a copy or two from this seller in the past, and at least one came with some minor internal wrinkling, likely from the printing process. That would make it like a factory second or B stock kind of book. This wasn't mentioned in the seller's description and he was quite miffed when I brought it up to him. So caveat emptor in that regard.

But still, $70 for a book that, 1 year ago, you couldn't find for less than $200 is pretty good, even with minor issues it may (or may not) come with.
I know Carlo posted about the Hans Prunner books on The Wallace Collection and the Churburg Armoury separately in this thread

http://www.myArmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=22704

but I wanted to provide some positive feedback on them and thought this would be the better thread.

The photography in these 2 rather large volumes is outstanding. There are multiple pictures of individual items (from multiple angles which you don't get in most books on arms and armour). The binding is excellent, plus shipping was quite fast to the US (10 days). They are very worthy of the price!

I'll second Thoms reply. The books are very nice and it was very simple to order. If you can afford them, don't hesitate! It's a wonderful pair to show off on your bookshelf and I know now that I would have regret not buying them if they ran out.
The quality of the photos are exceptional and on top of that Carlo Paggiarino is a very nice chap to do buissness with!

/Eric, proud owner of both publications
I third it! And, if you become a member of our 'sister' site, the Arms & Armour Forum, then you get a 25 Euro discount ...
Thanks to Mark for posting the info about the books we have. Stock is runnig low.

I have 6 copies of In Service of the Duke left.
I am down to about 20 copies of Secrets German Medieval Swordsmanship.
I have about 30 copies of De Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi .

Just a nudge in case anyone missed this - and to give a glowing review to Doug: his fulfillment time is fast, and his honesty as a vendor is commendable.
I don't currently have the Wallace Collection book, but I want it badly. The shipping has always been prohibitive for me. Should anyone want to do a group purchase, please let me know! Chad had put one together years ago and I didn't participate because I was saving money. My bad.
I'm waiting on Toby Capwell's digital catalog of the Wallace Collection's arms and armour. :D
TOMAR half price
For those who don't know already, Paladin Press regularly have 'Slightly Scruffy' sales, where some of their titles are listed at half price. These books have been received some kind of damage during printing - bumps, tears, etc. It's a good way to get some of their titles cheaply.

Currently, they have Brian Price's Techniques of medieval armour reproduction listed at only $30: http://www.paladin-press.com/product/Techniqu...uffy_Books
Polearms of Paulus Hector Mair half price
Paladin have just announced some 'scruffy' copies of Polearms of Paulus Hector Mair for sale at half price: http://www.paladin-press.com/product/Polearms...uffy_Books
Paladin now have a 60% sale on their 'scruffies':

Codex Wallerstein for $18: http://www.paladin-press.com/product/Codex_Wa...uffy_Books

Polearms of Paulus Hector Mair for $16: http://www.paladin-press.com/product/Polearms...uffy_Books

Techniques of Medieval Armour Reproduction for $24: http://www.paladin-press.com/product/Techniqu...uffy_Books

Sale ends May 15. Good way to get these cheap if you're not worried about some bumps and scrapes ... or if you want an extra copy to have open at training or in the workshop!
