Hello,

Today I received my GDFB sallet helmet. (well ok It's my Christmas gift but I found it and couldn't resist trying it on... Laughing Out Loud )

Well the front and back are alright, but the helmet rocks from side to side when I move quickly. I'm planning on replacing the infamous all leather lining and installing a period correct lining when I can. My 3 questions are:

1) Does anyone know of where I could find a manuel/topic/article on how to reline the helmet exactly? I really have very little information on how to do that.

2) If I relined my helmet would that fix the side-to-side swinging problem?

3) Incase relining doesn't fix that problem, and as a temporary fix, would glueing some foam bars or strips on the inside sides of the helmet work? And is there any better way to stop it from swinging from side-to-side like it does

Thanks for your reply's in advance. Happy

Proper lining can solve everything (well, unless the helmet is twice the size of your head). Everything depends on how you make this lining. If the proportions of the helmet are wrong, you may need to use extra padding at the sides. If historical padding does not allow you to do it-invent something of your own. And if at first you do not succeed-keep trying until you do.

Greetings!
In this older topic, you can find plenty of information about lining a sallet!

Thanks for the links guys. Happy

As for a temporary fix, I was inspired by 12th century arming caps, or more specifically the ones with the roll of cloth to support the helm.

I remembered about those and decided to try something similar, I rolled 3 hand towels up and secured them by putting rubber bands on them. Then stuffed that in the helm under the leather suspension liner already there.

It fits almost perfect now. Happy
