Interesting hilt Len, thanks for sharing. The way the display is laid out, it looks like all of the items came from one grave. Maybe the hilt is authentic, as none of the other items in the display seem to be modern repros.

From the line drawing in the paper Matthew posted, the upper guard plate is so decorated that it seems unlikely that there was a pommel cap. It also seems unlikely there was a peen block, so I'm not sure how the hilt remained together... Confused

It only says that the three mounts holding the agates on top are soldered on. I'm assuming the tang is peened under the center one before soldering.
