Help searching for custom Gladius pics
Hey everyone, hopefuly someone here will be able to help me. A couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon a picture of a gladius with what I can only describe as fluted grooves, carved into the pommel and guard. If anyone knows what I'm talking about could you please post a picture or address of this sword, as I cant seem to find it again. Thanks in advance.
A quick google search brought up this picture, somehow related to the Epcot Center. Did the grooves cover the entire pommel and guard or were there just a small number? John Lundemo did some custom gladii that had one or two grooves around the guard and the handle.

Ave!

Was it something like the guard at lower right in this drawing?

It's a very well-known piece, often copied. Only the guard was found. At left in that drawing you can see a guard with some lines around the bottom edge, and above that a pommel with raised lines around its middle.

Most pommels and guards seem to have been pretty plain, but there are a few more exciting ones out there.

Something like this?

Yep that's it alright, thanks Joel. It's a pity though because IIRC Phoenix Metal Creations are no longer in business. This sword is obviously based on the guard in the Mathew's drawing, and as you say its quite well known, I wonder if other makers have tried their hands at making a copy?

From what I've seen, *most* other gladius makers have done their own versions! Options are limited for hilt decorations, and that's the one that catches the eye more than any other.

Oddly enough, I'm not sure the wood of the original piece has been analyzed. Most surviving pommels and guards are light-colored woods such as maple or birch or boxwood, or they are made of bone or ivory, but reenactors mostly use walnut or other dark woods to get a contrast with the bone grip.

I think I might be able to help a little.
