Ok, thanks! I had thought the cruciform sword simply kinda stopped being made, I dunno why. I just assumed it was only complex guarded swords. I had thought that by the 16th century the simple cruciform swords (aside from like the larger bastard swords) where just kinda left-overs. I think a reenactor guy told me that actually.

One should always remember that styles come and go and the type of guard one has on the blade is as much fashion as anything else. The single handed cruciform style sword, while being less common at different points often reappears as a fashion throughout the 16th and 17th centuries.

There are some "gothic revivals" as it where through out this period from some that are very close to Medieval styles but with an esthetic of a later day to such pieces as pillow or sash swords that are cruciform in design but a short lived transition in smallswords.
