info needed on type XV sword
Hi all,

I need as much info as possible on this particular sword. It's a type XV as you can see, and more details can be found here:

Apparently it is privately owned, but I'm sure I've seen it somewhere else as well, but can't figure out where exactly.

A bigger picture of the sword would be very appreciated, as well as any dimensions you may have (beside the one that can be found on the site : Overall: 99.5 cm. Blade: 84 cm.)

many thanks,

julien
Hi Julien,

Have you checked Oakeshott's "Records..."? I'm thinking that's where I may have seen it.

Cheers,

Christian
Seeing the one Julien posted immediately made me think of the Wallace Collection sword. It's very similar to an example in the Wallace Collection, but I don't think it's the same one.

hi Christian, Chad,

No this one is not featured in "Records", and though it is very similar to the one in the Wallace (featured in records) it is not the same sword.

There is something about the blade geometry of that one that I really enjoy...I think it is the very slightly flared shouders that I've very rarely seen on a type V...or maybe an optical trick...that's why I wish I had a better picture :)

cheers,

Julien
I wonder if it was originally a Type XVIII that has eventially been honed down to the profile of a Type XV? That might be one explanation for the flaring effect at the hilt?

IIRC Oakeshott mentions that this well known Type XV might have started out as a Type XVIII and been shaped by repeated sharpening.
