Bauernwehr Question
Hello,
I have in my collection an original Bauernwehr found in England. Obviously it seems to be of German origin... and its arrival in England remains a mystery.
I am less familiar with German knives and swords of this period, as I tend to focus on an earlier period. This piece has a great deal of sentimental value and I intend on getting a good reproduction made. It is, however, a somewhat odd specimen which may require a bit of conjecture. The piece has a nagel, but no evidence of a bolster or pommel. I have seen a few examples without pommels.... but none with out bolsters. Does anyone know of any Hauswehrs/Bauernwehrs without bolsters?
I am attaching a grainy picture...
Any help is appreciated.
Best,
Hadrian

It is also referred to as a "Rugger".

Hello,
I have seen a few now with a nagel but no remaining bolster... although they seem to have once had a bolster. The difficulty with this piece is that it has wood corrosion on the nagel.... it seems thus that no bolster was originally present.

Hadrian
I think that must have been a common construction. Here are some images I've collected:

Lovely!
Thank you Sean.

Here are some more examples, sorry for the bad results, photos were taken under limiting conditions. Note, one of them has the naggel driven through the guard.
