Can anyone refer me to sources or provide information on the crosses used on Teutonic shields of c.13th century (before Tannenberg 1410)?

In particular I've tried researching the subject but found next to nothing other than illustrations or models depicting full black crosses of heater shields. I think there were probably several variations. My specific questions are 1/ Were longer, elongated shields (similar to Norman style) ever used early on, and 2/ Did any types of shield depict a cross that did not extend fully to the shield edges? I've seen a few wargames figures painted with a small Maltese cross in the centre of a large white shield but I'm not sure whether this is guesswork or artistic licence!

Any help much appreciated.

As far as it goes, the Teutonic order shields were represented on their coins:

(page is in polish, but Master's name and dates are easy to see)
You got basically two patterns, straight cross and "Grandmeister"'s cross (with black eagle on plaque inside, and golden lines on cross arms, though on coins you see different patterns at line's endings)
This symbolism was reserved for order's brothers, guest usually used their own heraldic devices.
