scale armour finds and authenticity
hello all
im putting together a kit over the summer and seeing as scales are relatively easy to make if very time consuming i thought i would try my hand at them.
now the kit will be circa 1275 and is open at the moment to what area its from as it will be at the moment a c.o.p and great helm. i want to make scale vambraces and other pieces to add on to this.
now my question is apart from effigies and art work what scale armour is there? have there actually been any finds of it in western Europe? if so any links and photos will be great i have had to research the hell out of this and am still getting nowhere.
so can you please help?
Much earlier than your target time period, but there you go:

Ignore the low-quality reconstructed figure on the site.

Heh. Look at the dodgy illustration on the right - straight out of Braveheart. :)
interesting this find was circa 1010 or so wasnt it? so i could make one and add it to my vik kit?
if so how might it have actually looked?

Reminds me of that french reconstruction of a norman knight. They basically made a piece of armour constructed from non-overlapping disks rivetted to a backing of cloth to approximate the illustrations on the Bayeux Tapestry.

The result looked pretty cool.
The only real scale armor I have been able to find and take close up pictures of ......... Japanese fish scale type armor made from hardened leather sewn to cloth. I would imaging that the construction method would be close to that of similar European scales. This is a helmet neck guard. http://s831.photobucket.com/albums/zz238/estc...e%20armor/
