I hope, you can help me.

I´ve got an sword by Pavel Moc, which I´m using for re-enactment and fencing since a few years now - and since the old grip has suffered, I want to replace it with a new, and more historical correct one.

When browsing through the images of long sword, I found one of a tomb slab from a local museum showing a sword with risers on the grip, that form an St.Andrew´s Cross. Since I like the design, I´d like to replicate this for my sword.

Just one thing keeps me from doing it: "my" time-period is 1460-1475 (Bavaria/ South German), and all grips fashioned like this seem to be younger, the tomb here being from 1495 -20 years in fashion of that time is quite a lot.

Now the question: did this style of fashioning a sword grip develope in the 1480ies, or do you know earlier examples, maybe even from the 1460ies? What do you think?

Hi,
the right character on the Paumgartner altar by Dürer carries such a sword but again, it's dated 1502 :(

yeah, I know the Baumberger altar - after 1490 you can find quite a lot of swords with these grip furnishings.Unfortunately, before 1480 they´re quite rare...
