Hi All,

I have an enquiry about a dagger and have attached pictures. The hilt forms are clearly stylized, but Landsknechts being who they were, possibly not that much.

Does anyone have any pictures or better artwork that shows this dagger and scabbard style in better detail.

The scabbards look like they may follow similar lines to those often seen on other Landsknecht dagger types, but the hilt design is curious.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Tod

Hi Leo,
I just found a sketch of one of these daggers in a book that is over 100 years old. The author calls it a typical Landsknecht dagger and it is not so seldom depicted in contemporary art showing landsknechts. According to the book, the piece in the picture was (in 1888) in a princely collection in Germany.

Thanks Felix,

Many thanks for posting that up.

The hilt is similar to the drawing or at least could be interpreted as similar to the drawing, and the scabbard is also very similar I think, but the pommel is quite different.

So the search goes on. Is the dagger I showed in the artwork I posted up artistic license or is it based on a real dagger style?
