I've used Autosol on my armours(Don't have a sword, yet) before. When my armour have some rusty part, all I do is just apply autosol and polish it with tissue. It take the rust off and leaving it shining.
I want to second Timo's mention of Lanox (and similar products, such as Lanotec) - because it's lanolin-based, this product can be used not only on steel, but also leather and wood, meaning you can use the one rag to wipe down a whole weapon.
I use 91% rubbing alcohol to clean my blades, and silicone spray to oil them. I've never had any problems with rust.
