Rapier Scabbards
Hi Pascal

Period rapier scabbards have a different construction in most cases to earlier medieval types. I am not sure what you mean by "figurine" but they do some times have elaborate chapes. In most cases the do not have throats or lockets. They will have a bulge or swelling under the covering that will allow the hanger to tighten down and not have the scabbard slide. The shape of the interior is usually a box, not the tight fitting shapes of earlier scabbards. They also will often have the front and back of the scabbard extend up the ricasso to the cross. there are no sides on this section.

There is not a lot of literature on these items and few of the average pieces are displayed in museums or pictured in collections. It can be difficult finding info on them.

Hope this helps

Craig

Pascal,

I made one a while back. To work within that slender profile takes some patience, but it's not too bad. I used a dremel to hollow out two slats, then glued them together. The mated surface won't be very wide so you'll have to be meticulous about gluing it. When shaping the outside you'll just have to keep in mind the internal dimensions. I suggest starting with a belt sander if you have one, then finishing it with paper.

If yours has a ricasso, fit the mouth to that.
Good Luck :D

It's lacewood, with a ferrule made from walnut at the top. Not exactly historic I know. It was fun though.
The chape came from the original Hanwei scabbard that came with the sword. I haven't been able to find a suitable chape for a rapier anywhere on the net.
