In many portraits, and funereal effigies, there is significant variation in how the helmet (usually a close helm) is shown. The helmet is usually at the deceased's side, on a table, or near his head (in an effigy.) Sometimes the visor is up. Sometimes it is down and the helmet closed. Sometimes, also, just the vision slit is lifted up, but the lower part (bevor) is still down. Is there any symbolic meaning to the position of the visor?
