On this we agree, there are so many " hand made " slight imperfections in original armour that would not be acceptible in todays market, medial ridges not quite lining up from plate to plate, mislocated holes simply left blind and a new one made ect.

Oh, yes, should have said that! It doesn't have to match the outline of the domed head exactly, and the hole should be a hair shallower than the thickness of the head. If you get it too deep, or the hole deepens with use, no problem, just grind or file away some of the metal.
Most any chunk of metal that can be secured in some way will do. A slab of half-inch stock clamped to the workbench, for instance. Put the hole near a corner so it's easy to reach.
And don't dismiss that hungover monkey too quickly--he's *exactly* the guy who made a lot of Roman stuff! Seriously crappy riveting!
