Archers and battle rompers in the Bayeux Tapestry
HI All

I was looking at piccies of the BT and saw an image of archers (Can be seen on the Regia Anglorum archery page, linked below) and they appear to be wearing some sort of battle rompers - in the pic there is an archer in (what most people take to be a representation of) maille yet the others are wearing something similar in shape but not in construction. Could this be some kind of <cringe> padding? Anyone care to comment?

I'm going to hazard a guess and say that rather than <cringe> padding, it may be an attempt to show volume and folds in thier tunics perhaps?
Verily! Though I'm surprised that the garment would be so leg hugging, when loose baggy tunics are so prevalent on some of the other protagonists?
Perhaps it's the artists lack of perspective? Then again, it looks as though one of them has his his quiver attached in an odd way that might pull on the tunic?
