I'm most interested in the period after the capture of Jerusalem and perhaps, if I would choose a time frame, I'm most interested from the year 1177 when the Battle of Mongisard took place and the army of Jerusalem chrushed Saladin, and then the disasters in 1187 and to the end of 3. crusade.
I have been suggested an Albion Hospitaller as the most realistic and appropriate for this time period. But I haven't decided yet.

Does any decorated crusader sword exist today at all, except the sword of Saint Maurice?

Maybe it's better to approach this issue from the other side: what period attracts you most? First crusade? Second? Third? Later?

Or do you want a sword that could have been used in all crusades? Do you also want to include the crusades in the Baltic? If so, up to when?

If so, I think that you are more or less limited to a sword with an Oakeshott type X or XI blade with a wheel pommel. The appropriateness of symbols (e.g. crosses) or motto's (engraved or inlayed in the blade) also varies over time. Especially if you combine various styles, for instance add engraving to a brazil nut pommel, you can really narrow the suitable time frame down, and that may not be what you want.

And I would say that there is nothing wrong with a plain, undecorated sword either. Although not so many swords that did belong to crusaders have been found, I don't recall any of them being decorated in a specific manner.

Hospitaller would be a great choice and the only thing I would maybe add is a simple cross-pattee on the pommel. There are some sword with engraved crosses and religious exclamations, but the words or letters are in the 11th and 12th centuries mostly inlays in the blade and on the hilt mostly just crosses. And they are not identified as crusader swords as they were found in Europe, but they could be by a crusader who returned home after the crusade. I'm aware of only one 12th or 13th century sword found in the Holy Land and here it is: http://www.myArmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t...ader+sword

Like I said before, you could certainly try sending Julien M. a PM to see if he'd be willing to work with you. I know that he's located in London, but I don't know what his policy is on outside/professional jobs right now. (Julien, if you're reading this, I don't mean to be overwhelming you, I just think you do outstanding work.)

No worries Nathan. To be honest I'm flattered (and a bit surprised) that someone recommends my work Happy

I too would recommend Brian, the best out there in my opinion. But if you are interested in having a scabbard made in Europe (for reasons I understand all too well having imported many stuff from overseas before), I would technically be able to do one for you Marko J (depending on which sword you choose Happy ). But this is my passion and hobby, something I do during whatever free time I have, and as such deadlines might be an issue for me. Now this is your first sword, and the waiting might be hard to bear! (I have no idea how long the pros take to do a scabbard and more importantly what their waiting list are like?) If you want to discuss it, drop me a PM...see if we can make it happen. A scabbard for that time period would be interesting for me to make with it's intricate belt system and opened scabbard mouth.

Sword wise: I'm no specialist of the "crusader era" (my interest lean more towards the one hundred years war and early renaissance) but I'd personally go for the Arn sword. It is still featured here on the albion europe website, with a quoted price of 800 euros, maybe including the "economy sucks" -15% discount (680 euros?) (Might be over your price range for a sword and scabbard combo though). The A knight is also a splendid type XII...maybe not leaning towards the crusader aesthetics you are looking after?

Otherwise, among the sword you have quoted, I'd go for the A&A sword of Saint Maurice. I'm not a big fan of wired grips though, so I'd ask for a bare wood grip (cheaper maybe) and would do both sword grip and scabbard to fit my needs (the leather grip adds to the heavy duty serviceable weapon side of things I think). I'll use light antiquing techniques to make the engraving of the cross and pommel stand out. I really think that this sword can be amazing to behold with such modifications (not that it is not in its current state Happy).

Cheers,

J
