Do any of you know of any available written analysis on the metallurgical properties of the iron/steel found in the 16th century baskethilts (the hilts specifically)?

Or, for those involved in replication/reproduction hilts of that period; what type of modern material/s do you use in an effort to match the originals?

Thank you.
