Hi all,

Per the title- any recommendations on a decent quality grosse messer? The only two I have been able to find are the behemoth from Cold Steel (which, based on the reviews I've seen, is not what I want) or the Soldat from Albion (which is absolutely beautiful, but more than I can justify spending at the moment).

Does anyone know of anything else available which is less pricey, but also well made (and not going to break my wrists)?

You should take a look at European makers like Lutel or Arma Bohemia (if their website can get back online someday)...

You could of course ask for a quote from Ollin Sword, but I suspect the price will be comparable or superior to the one of the Albion Soldat...

Are you looking for a messer or kriegmesser ?

Edit : hey, maybe you could also ask Leo Todeschini from Tods Stuff to make you a quote. He's the king of knives, so that should be right up his alley.

Hi there!

I have 2 grossemessers (kriegsmesser), perhaps the form of them will help you choose.
The smaller one is around 3 pounds, the bigger is like 6-7 pounds. Both of them have great feeling to use, and everybody says: Whooaaa!!, when they see them. By the way both of them are correct and authentic, so I think, you will like these forms.
I think if you show the pictures to a blacksmith it can make you a customized sword. I would say, come to Hungary, we have some cheap and well-working blacksmithies, but probably it's far for you Happy

Woups ! Must have been a temporary glitch. Seems like Arma Bohemia's website is often down when I try to access it. Eek!

Thanks guys, Arma Bohemia do have a messer that looks like what I'm after (EP29). As a matter of interest, has anyone used this piece and/or know how it handles?

Norbert, thanks for the invitation, it is a bit far to travel to Hungary from New Zealand for a quick visit Wink
