It's tough to know how many medieval swords may have been blackened or even had their hilts painted. Over-zealous cleaning in years past and/or years in a river or in the ground can ruin that.

We do have plenty of period art showing armour and swords that appear to have dark tints to them. Whether that's true or artistic license, or the effect of years on sometimes-unstable paints, we don't really know.

But doing something for rust protection or decoration is still different than trying to remove newness with selective blueing. Happy

Jonathan,
I agree with you, I like to put a little of my own handy work into anything I own. I just picked up a Squireline Clontarf which will soon look more like a Next Gen when I'm done with it. Gold wire inlay, rewrapped grip, riveted pommel and maybe some etching on the blade to look like pattern welded.

Patrick,
I really like the gold cross inlay on your Senlac, very nicely done.

Nick,

That sounds quite nice. You will have to post some pics once you are completed. I'd like to see your work!
