Saxon armour on the Bayeaux Tapestry
Have another question related to the Duke Odo thread.

There are a few Saxons lying on the ground in the part of the tapestry where Harold's brothers are killed

The are wearing tunics which are entirely composed of diamond type designs.

Any idea as to what this is to represent?

They are clearly different than the Tunics being worn by archers and other types that look unarmoured.

On the other hand, they are also clearly different than those illustrated wearing mail, I can't see this as a bad illustration of mail.

After looking at the Odo illustration, they look to be wearing something similar to what he has over his mail.

Any thoughts on this?

BTW - Here is a link to the specific part of the Tapestry. Look at the felled Warriors towards the bottom, but there are a handful of these types:

I figure for it to be a gambeson of some kind.
