I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this question, if its not please move to the right one.

After reading Keiths thread on the Massey Sgian I was wondering if anyone has pictures of a Sgian Achlais that they can post.

Also how was it held in place near the arm pit?

thanks,

dave

Here's a pic of my sgian achles (blade by Kirby Wise, hilted by Art Elwell).

Attached is the original it was based on.

I have no idea how to wear it.

Hey Chad!

Now that I like! Do you have a blade length and overall length?

The grip is what, antler?

I can't for the life of me figure out how they were worn.

The grip is elk antler. The tang of the knife goes through the handle and is secured by a counter-sunk nut. I believe it's filled with some epoxy to fill the gaps. A brass plate is pinned over that end of the grip with 7 brass nails. It's 10 3/8" long. The blade is 6" long.

The scabbard Art made for it just has a clip for your belt or pocket.

Hi Dave

I've not come across anything that shows exactly how they were worn, or held in place !
I've heard bits about a jacket pocket , things about it being wrapped in the folds of the plaid, etc., but I suspect they're all speculative !

Here's a link that gives a nice overview of the sgian's history :
