Hey Ryan,
I've got one of the short versions and was able to wear a maille shirt (absolutely first time for wearing any of it for more than 20 minutes), and full arms for about 11 hours with little ill effects. I'm not used to wearing armor (this was at a weekend long faire, and most of the armor I had just received the week prior), and I was very comfortable for the entire day.
It's padded fairly well, and feels right. I didn't feel like the Michelin man with just the gambeson on, and it looked fine.
