Salutations my friends. I'm planning on making a sheath/scabbard for my Windlass two handed falchion. I was wondering what kinds of construction methods were used for for historical pieces. I'm not talking about the higher end falchions and messers of the more decorative forms. What I'm talking about is the workhorse swords; the weapons used by those who couldn't afford a well made high end sword (or the training) and used something that didn't require as much finesse or harmonious balance. For these types of swords, I ask: what types of sheaths/scabbards were used? Since messers in particular had hilts similar to knives, did they have simple leather sheaths like knives as well? Did falchions have wooden cored scabbards like other medieval swords, or were they the same as messers? Or... did they have sheaths or scabbards at all? Any help would be much appreciated as always. Thanks.

Lots here about messer scabbards, including notes from Peter Johnsson.
