Chrismas list
Since you said below $1500 that rules out Rob Millers Finnish Viking sword that he posted last year. Since you didn't say it had to be new, I would like Albions Valkyrja. What do you think the odds are of someone wanting to sell one before Christmas. I was just getting ready to order one when my computer went down, by the time I got back online they were sold out. I guess I should have used that stoneage tool called a telephone. Hope the rest of you get your wish.

Nathan - you did not answer the question yourself. What do you want for Christmas?

If I hadn't set the $1500 limit, it would be the Albion Knecht grossemesser but that doesn't fit in the budget.

So what's at the top of my list? The Albion Munich Sword.

Excellent choice. If it weren't for the price limit, I'd have an easier time picking one... I'd want the Albion Svante Nilsson Sture Sword.
I'd have to say that I want the Albion Yeoman. But my amazing wife that loves me ordered it for me! So, I'd have to say that I would want a DBK scabbard to go with it! (Not exactly a sword, but an important accessory.)
I would say the Albion Munich, except that I've already ordered it some time ago. Then I would have said this koshirae offered by Ted Tenold for a remarkable price, but it actually has been sold. So I guess that leaves... an Albion Gallowglass.

Albion Oakeshott would be my choice. I would love to see this blade in person.
I'd have to say at this moment I want the Albion Next Generation Viceroy the most right now. I've been drooling over that one for a long time...
Already have my present - the Albion Valkyrie with custom green leather grip.

Were I to get another sword (in definance of common sense because my wife would promptly use it to hack me to pieces with without compunction) it would probably be a semi-custom A&A 12th Century Sword, that would be modified to be more like the old Johann Schmidberger European Hand and Half sword (this would involve minor changes to the pommel, swapping out the crossguard to one from a different A&A piece, and the addition of a wire wrapped grip; the blade should remain the same). While technically a custom job, I'd be surprised if this punched past $1000, let alone $1500.
My first choice would have been a customised version of the Saxon style rapier offered by A&A as part of their Fall muster.
I'd love to own a version were the Saxon style hilt was combined with the blade of the Town Guard sword to create the kind of military "sidearme" ("seitenwehr") mention in almost all mid-late German military texts.

If such a combination was impossible for one reason or another I'd go with the A&A Town Guard sword as it is typical of the high quality military sidearms in use in the early 17th Century. The originals I've been able to examine in person are among the finest 17th century military swords I have seen.

Now you have me thinking of the old Johann Schmidberger katzbalger-hilted two-hander.

I recall seeing one of these at a local Renaissance Faire in New Hope, PA (it only happened for one year, IIRC). The owners had neglected this beautiful thing, and had left it exposed to the elements! The whole thing was convered with a patina of rust. Such a friggin' shame... :(

That being said, they let me handle it, and it was light and responsive--a nice piece, IMO.
At this point, abiding by the conditions set forth, an A&A Northern Italian Rapier.
Arma Bohemia Katzbalger

Production or semi-production, pal! Next pick! ;)

(I'm with you, man, that thing was a beauty when they had it waiting and in stock...)

Yeah. Doesn't that Katzbalger have a fantastic blade!

All right. My next production piece is going to be the new A&A Schloss Erbach. Now since the Erbach doesn't come close to the $1500 can Santa just give me the balance in cash so I can pay off the dagger I've been saving up for ;)
Gifts for my wife and children...

To make up for all the money I spend on swords and armor for myself this year... :D
Armour Class Cromwell... but that won't happen.

What about it with a mono-steel blade? That would be my pick. Besides the Suontaka sword was not pattern-welded.

that's a grand choice! wouldn't mind that one myself....would fit nicely with the rest of my mortuarys

So as not to be crazy with this, let's assign some rules to this game:
  • Pick something you really want and would intend to keep
  • Santa isn't rich. Stay under a maximum price of $1500 US
  • Pick a production / semi-production piece and not some custom dream piece
  • Choose just one thing. I know it's hard. One sword

Be somewhat realistic here :)

Ugh. This is rough...

Okay, I think I would have to go with the Landgraf, from the Albion Mark lineup.

I'd probably use the extra $500 to get a "Gothic" treatment from Christian Fletcher for both hilt and scabbard, possibly using some custom fittings from Sam Havercamp...

... does anyone know of any examples of gargoyles/grotesques used in scabbard ornamentation, out of curiosity?

I've seen grotesque figures on rapier hilts and I believe on a rapier scabbard or belt fitting, but that's it.
An Albion Tritonia would be the one for me. The sword of St. Maurice is running neck and neck though.
