Hey all,
I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but if you haven't seen this fellow's video's, then I heartily suggest you do: http://www.celticknot.com/

The gentleman produces a two video set (I just had it out from the library recently) and it's really great on covering the basics of knife making, as well as making a lot of your own tools ( I had no idea you could makeshift a forge from an old wheel hub:)

The video covers the ground-up making of a knife, from the raw materials, to the hardware making, and all that. Very informative. I most likely will buy a copy when cash permits. In addition, Mr. Garland is very intelligent and personable, which makes the video that much more interesting.

Regards,
Geo
